Os contos de A cor do presente tratam do nonsense e do irreversível da realidade, e também da melancolia e da solidão. Para materializar as questões, o escritor vale-se de enredos com personagens variados, entre eles um cantor, uma detetive, um falsificador de obras de arte, uma historiadora, jogadores de futebol da segunda divisão e criminosos. E, apesar dos enredos, o que ainda chama atenção é a linguagem exaustivamente burilada e em sintonia com a oralidade e vozes literárias contemporâneas e clássicas.
A cor do presente confirma que Marcio Renato dos Santos – desde Minda-au, o seu primeiro livro, publicado em 2010 – segue recriando sonhos, fragmentos do real e narrativas de outros escritores, poetas, cineastas e artistas visuais – o desenho da capa e o da página 2 são de autoria de Simon Taylor.
